Frequently asked questions

What is botanical art?

Botanical art is a form of fine art that focuses on capturing the beauty, structure, and character of plants. It blends scientific accuracy with an artistic, expressive approach, highlighting details such as colour, texture, and form. Each piece is created through close observation of real plants, flowers, and natural elements. Botanical art has a long tradition dating back centuries and is still cherished today for its timeless aesthetic and connection to nature. My work continues this tradition, with each artwork carefully crafted to celebrate the delicate and intricate world of plants.

What makes botanical art different from botanical illustration?

Although botanical art and botanical illustration share similarities, they serve slightly different purposes. Botanical illustration is typically created for scientific or educational use and focuses on absolute accuracy and clarity, often including multiple views or diagrams of the plant. Botanical art, on the other hand, allows more artistic freedom. While still rooted in accuracy and observation, it prioritises composition, mood, and aesthetic expression. My botanical artworks are true-to-life but also reflect personal interpretation, atmosphere, and artistic storytelling.

Which mediums do you use in your art?

I work primarily in watercolour, a medium that beautifully captures the subtle translucency and delicate textures found in plants and flowers. Watercolour allows me to build gentle layers, create luminous colour transitions, and reflect the natural softness of botanical subjects.

What is a giclée print?

A giclée print is a high-quality fine art reproduction created using professional-grade inkjet printers, archival pigment inks, and premium acid-free paper. Compared to standard printing, giclée prints offer superior colour accuracy, detail, and longevity, often lasting over 100 years without fading when properly cared for. All my fine art prints are produced using the giclée method to ensure they remain faithful to the original artwork in colour, texture, and clarity. This makes them an excellent choice for collectors who want museum-quality botanical art at an accessible price.

What is the difference between an original artwork and a fine art print?

An original artwork is the one-of-a-kind piece created entirely by hand, using traditional mediums such as watercolour or coloured pencils. It contains the artist’s unique marks, textures, and subtle variations that can only appear in a physical original. A fine art print, such as a giclée print, is a high-quality reproduction of that original artwork. While it captures the colours and details with exceptional accuracy, it is not the only version. Prints make artwork more accessible and affordable, while originals remain unique collector’s pieces. Both options offer beautiful ways to enjoy botanical art, depending on the style of collection you prefer.,
